الاختلافات في الآراء في العقيدة الإسلامية

What is the difference between faith and belief?

Faith is the name of certainty and belief is its reaction. Occurrence of faith is not a discretionary thing.  By consideration and attention our minds get affected and we start believing. Meaning faith comes and we believe. In this process there cannot be a coercive influence or force that can make us believe.

(Meaning -  There is no compulsion in Islam. Truth and untruth is abundantly clear and distinct from each other. Whoever disbelieves in Taghut (forces of disorder) and believes in Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی), has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break.  And Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) is All-Hearer, All-Knower. (Al-Baqra – 256).

It is in Quran –   فَلَعَلَّكَ بَاخِعٌ نَّفْسَكَ عَلَىٰ آثَارِهِمْ إِن لَّمْ يُؤْمِنُوا بِهَـٰذَا الْحَدِيثِ أَسَفًا  (Meaning - And if they believe not in this declaration (Islamic Testimony – Shahadah), it does not follow that you, O’Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) should not vex yourself to death by going after them. (Al-Kahaf – 6).

Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) created human beings with intelligence and provided them with knowledge and gave them the required free will. Therefore they are expected to use these faculties as per the commandments of Allah  (سبحانہ و تعا لی). If they act against this requirement, they will harm themselves in in this world and in Hereafter.

As far as religious intelligence and analytical skills are concerned, people can be divided into two main categories;  (i) Superior nature, and (ii) Inferior nature.

Those who have elevated virtuous nature, pay attention towards their natural instincts and carry out good deeds easily and, as such, success and leadership is associated with them.  This category consists of Prophets and Apostles.

It is in Quran – اللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ حَيْثُ يَجْعَلُ رِسَالَتَهُ ۗ   (Meaning - Allah- سبحانہ و تعا لی knows it well who is capable for Apostleship’. ( An-A’am - 124).

The nature of Prophets and Apostles is such that they have natural conformity with the spiritual world. It is in their natural disposition that they take from Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) and give to His servants. They listen from the truthful Being (Allah –سبحانہ و تعا لی) and transfer back to His creatures.

Among the followers of Prophets, there are four types of people, as follows.

(a) Virtuous souls - Virtuous souls,  like the family members of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), his companions, Imams of various Islamic fields and prominent Islamic personalities  who reach to the elevated states in closeness to Allah  (سبحانہ و تعا لی) in the guidance and with assistance of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

(b) Shaikhs of Ihsan (Sufia) - Their hearts are purified,  minds are illuminated and they are generally rewarded with  unveiling (Kashf - vision) and their  perpetual focus is on the Unity of Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی). They are inspired with Islamic wisdom with which they can understand  the facts of things precisely. They are referred  as   Friends of Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) in Quran and Ahadith. They  walk on the foot steps of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).  They purify people's hearts, cleanse them from worldly desires and help them to get close to Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). They are Islamic doctors who explain Correct Islamic Faith and practices to people with irrefutable evidence from Quran, Ahadith and Allah's (سبحانہ و تعا لی)  signs in the Cosmos. They expose the ill gotten ‘tricks’ of Non-Muslim theosophists and misguided Muslim sects.

The main opponents of the Shaikhs of Ihsan (Sufia) are Non-Muslim Theosophists (Spiritualists/Godmen) and so called scholars of misguided Muslim Sects.

It is in Hadith -   It is reported that Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)  once said after the Salah:  'O' people! listen to this, understand it and know it.  Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) has servants who are neither prophets nor martyrs and whom they prophets and martyrs yearn to be like, due to their seat and proximity in relation to Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی). One of the Bedouin Arabs who came from among the most isolated of people twisted his hand at the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and said: O' Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) People from humankind who are neither prophets nor martyrs and yet the prophets and martyrs yearn to be like them due to their seat and proximity in relation to Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) ! Describe them for us!"

'The Prophet's (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) face showed delight at the Bedouin's question and he said:'. "They are of the strangers from this and that place.  They frequent this or that tribe without belonging to them.  They do not have family connections among themselves.  They love one another for Allah's (سبحانہ و تعا لی) sake. They are of pure intent towards one another.  On the Day of Resurrection Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) will place for them pedestals of light upon which He will make them sit and He will turn their faces and clothes into light.  On the Day of Resurrection, the people will be terrified but not those.  They are Allah's (سبحانہ و تعا لی) Friends (Awliya), upon whom fear comes not, nor do they grieve".

The above Hadith is related through several chains by Abu Dawud, Ahmad; Baghawi in Sharh al-Sunna; al-Hakim in the Mustadrak; Ibn 'Asakir, Ibn Abi al-Dunya in Kitab al-Ikhwan; Ibn Jarir al-Tabari, Ibn Abi Hatim, Ibn Mardawayh, and others.  Haythami in Majma'al-Zawa'id says: 'Ahmad relates it, and Tabrani relates something similar, and the men in its chain of transmission have been declared trustworthy".

(c) Islamic Scholars / Theologians (Mutakallimoon) - They attain expertise in Islamic reasoning under the guidance of Shaikhs of Ihsan (Sufia).  They impede the assaults on Islamic faith from non-Muslims and deviated Muslim Sects. They explain Sahih Iman to people with conclusive logical evidence from Quran and Ahadith and expose the ill gotten ‘ideas’ of Non-Muslim philosophers and misguided Muslim sects.

The main opponents of Islamic scholars are Non-Muslim philosophers and Preachers of misguided Muslim Sects.

(d) Truthful Muslims -  Real Ahle Sunnah wal Jama'a achieve their success in this world and salvation in Hereafter under the guidance and following of the virtuous souls,  friends of Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) and Islamic Scholars / theologians.

Those who have inferior nature, never come to the right path, even if they are explained repeatedly. They are blind and deaf from the beginning and remain petty minded throughout their lives.

Eternally wretched cannot be guided from the sermons of Awliya Allah
.   They cannot be guided even from the guiding light of  Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

It is in Quran -
إِنَّكَ لَا تَهْدِي مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ يَهْدِي مَن يَشَاءُ ۚ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ  [Meaning - You (O’ Mohammad - صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) cannot guide everyone you like (to the desired objective), but Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) guides whom He will.  And He is Best Aware of those who walk aright (who can follow guidance)]. (Al-Qasas – 56).

It is in Quran – صُمٌّ بُكْمٌ عُمْيٌ فَهُمْ لَا يَرْجِعُونَ ( Meaning - Deaf, dumb and blind, they will not return (to the right path). (Al-Baqara – 18).

Muslim community in the world is divided into 73 sects and hundreds of sub groups which are increasing by the day.  As per Ahadith (Tirmidhi), only one group is on the right path and the rest are scheduled to be thrown into Hell Fire.  Thus, out of the huge population of over 1.88 billion Muslims in the world,  a small percentage is on the right path.  The remaining are likely to be thrown into hell fire permanently.

In the light of Quran and Ahadith we have proved that Ahle Sunnah wal Jama'a is the only group who  are on the right path of Islam. Their Islamic Faith is correct and they stand a good chance of salvation in Hereafter.

As per Ahadith-e-Nabawi (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), out of 73 Sects of Muslims only one group has Sahih Iman. The remaining 72 Sects and their hundreds of sub Groups have Wrong Passion for certain misguided notions and  they have mistaken their passion as Islamic faith.  Like Salafis have passion to worship an Idol Sky God.  They have passion to disgrace the Prophet of Islam (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) by building  Public Toilets on his sacred house in Makka.  They had the worst monster-like passion to dig the graves of Sahabah, family members of Prophet Mohammad  (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and throwing and disposing their pious bodies elsewhere.  They have passion to change all Ahadith books.  They have passion to change the meanings of Quranic verses to suit their ill gotten notions.  (Click here to read full Article on black deeds of Salafis).  They have passion to declare True Muslims as Grave worshipers and Kafirs.  The list of their passions is endless. They do not realize that it is dangerous to replace Islamic Faith with self acquired passions. Passion makes people adamant, inflexible, overzealous, missionary and militant.  These qualities can be noticed in all misguided sects, particularly Salafis and their like minded groups in the world.

The Makkan apostates had similar passions. Their tribal chiefs were afraid that if they accept Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), their leadership and sources of income will vanish.   This was the reason they opposed the Prophet of Islam (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

Followers of Muslim Sects and their sub groups have been brainwashed by their founders, scholars and preachers. If we explain them truthful Islamic believes, they feel annoyed.  When we prove our explanations from Quran and Sunnah they get convinced in their hearts, but feel hurt and let down.   Their hurt is exposed by their angry response and foul language.

What happens when their arguments fail in view of the facts presented to them about Sahih Iman?

They go back to their sect's preachers with  questions cropped up in their minds. The preachers first try to convince them and re-instill their lost confidence and bring them back to their fold.   They also scare them and advise them not to go near certain Ahle Sunnah Scholar, branding him as 'grave worshiper'.

When this attempt fails, all the local sect's leaders sit together and invite their regional and country leaders and discuss this issue and decide to start a personal slander campaign against the person who is trying to teach truthful Islamic believes to people.

His life history and his family background is studied. All his human weaknesses are gathered; like the size of his beard is checked, he goes to which mosque is searched, his books, video lectures and all published information is gathered.  Everything is studied meticulously in order to find faults with him. If they do not find their wanted information, they fabricate data with modern electronic equipment and software and concoct stories.  CDs are made using ‘out of context’ references and  he is maligned in media campaigns. On the basis of this fabricated information, they issue Fatwas against him and start a slander campaign to discredit him among masses.

When the person refutes all charges in public and explains his innocence, they try to physically stop him from his campaign in collusion with local authorities using influence, money and blackmail. If this fails, they try to  hack his related Websites.  If this also fails, they convince Salafi Governments to blacklist this person. The list of their passionate actions is endless.   Makkan apostates used to do similar gimmicks against the Prophet
(صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

What will they achieve by misguiding people by such tricks?

It is obvious, they want to continue their leadership and keep their financial resources / charities intact.  Indeed it was the same objective in front of Makkan apostates.

Dear brothers and sisters, it is advisable that people are judged on the strength of their explanations based on Quran and Ahadith. It is important that we control our passions and be positive and keep our minds open for good counseling.   Let us not close the door of truthful Islam on ourselves.  Let us not become part of the sects /sub groups who have gone astray.

There are hundreds of Ahle Sunnah Institutions who are propagating Sahih Iman in the world.  In addition, there are Sufi Shaikhs who are involved in Tazkia Nafs of their Mureedeen and Mua'teqadeen.  There are Ahle Sunnah educators who are busy in educating Muslim children in Madrasas and Mosques all over the world. We also have certain famous Ahle Sunnah Scholars in the world who enjoy large followings among Muslims.
It is very much natural that there will be differences of opinions among scholars on certain issues.  As a matter of fact, these differences are healthy for a vibrant Muslim society.  However, it is important that we look at the greater cause and strengthen our efforts in protecting real Islam in the world.  In this context, following points are important.
(1) Some famous Ahle Sunnah Muftis are also influenced  by Salafi interpretations of certain Ahadith.  Like Salafis, they also say that reverence of pictures of Sufia-e-karam, Murshid and parents or hanging them on wall is not allowed in Islam. Like Salafis, they also quote the following Hadith to support their arguments.
It is in Hadith - Narrated by Ibn Abbas  (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ): 'When the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) saw pictures in the Ka'aba, he did not enter it till he ordered them to be erased. When he saw (the pictures of Abraham - علیھ السلا م and Ishmael - علیھ السلا م carrying the arrows of divination), he said, "May Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) curse them (the Quraish)! By Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) , neither Abraham (علیھ السلا م) nor Ishmael  (علیھ السلا م) practiced divination by arrows."  (Bukhari - Book #55, Hadith #571).
Above Hadith clearly specifies the reason for removal of pictures from Ka'aba. In these pictures, the Prophets (عليهم السلام) were shown "carrying the arrows of divination" which was the practice of Makkan apostates.
A picture taken for wrongful purpose is Haram in Islam while the picture taken for rightful purpose is allowed.  Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) was allowed to play with dolls (shapes of humans and animals) (Hadith Bukhari and Abu Dawood).

It is in Quran  - "They worked for him (Prophet Sulaiman - علیھ السلا م) as he desired, (making) arches, images, basins as large as reservoirs, and (cooking) cauldrons fixed (in their places): "Work O' Sons of David(علیھ السلا م) with thanks! but few of My servants are grateful!". (Saba - 13).

The  above Quranic verse says that some people worked as per the orders of Prophet Sulaiman (علیھ السلا م) and made images.  This act on their part was right.  Why?  Because these images were not meant for worship. The verse confirms the fact that the intention behind making images has to be virtuous.  Images made with bad intention (for worship) are disallowed and images made out of good intention are allowed in Islam.

Many of us will be surprised to know that Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) never had to pay Zakat. Why, because, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) never kept anything for himself or his family that entitles him to pay Zakat.  Whatever (money)  the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) had in his possession,  he used to give to the needy on the same day.  Similarly, Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) used to stand in prayers during nights and it is in Ahadith that his feet used to get swelled.  Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) used to keep continuous fast, sometimes 5 days or more in a row.  Sahaba  (رضئ اللھ تعالی عنہم اجمعین ) tried to emulate, but could not do so. Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) did not like to wear costly clothing. Most of the time he and his family members used to wear simple cloths. Also Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) did not like his family members keep costly things at homes.

It is in Hadith -  Narrated Ibn Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ): Once the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) went to the house of Fatima (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) but did not enter it. 'Ali (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) came and she told him about that. When 'Ali (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) asked the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) about it, he said, "I saw a  (multicolored) decorated curtain on her door. I am not interested in worldly things."  'Ali (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) went to Fatima (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) and told her about it. Fatima (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) said, "I am ready to dispense with it in the way the Prophet  (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) suggests." The Prophet  (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)  ordered her to send it to such-and-such needy people."  (Bukhari - Book #47, Hadith #783).

The above Hadith clearly establishes the fact that though Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) did not like his daughter Fatima (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) to use the  decorated curtain, but he gave it to a needy Sahabi for use. This shows that using of decorated curtain or curtain with pictures is not forbidden (Haraam) in Islam.  However, Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) preferred that his family members maintain utmost simplicity as far as possible.
Look at the example of Ghowth al-Azam (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ). He used costly clothing, decorated house and good rich food.  If it was not allowed in Islam, he would not have used it.
When we look at the removal of pictures from Ka'abatullah in this background, we realize that though Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) removed the pictures from there, but he did not forbid hanging of lawful pictures on the walls of our houses or respecting pictures because these belong to our revered Shaikhs or Dargahs.
Salafis hang the pictures of their kings in all Government offices, schools, colleges and respect these pictures because these belong to their kings.
Muslims hang pictures of Prophet's (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) dome, Ka'abtullah, Dargahs in their homes and respect these pictures. When we see live telecast of Salah from Masjid-e-Nabawi and Masjid-e-Haraam, we watch these pictures with a lot of reverence and respect. Similarly, when we see a famous shaikh addressing viewers on TV, we see his picture with  great respect. All this is allowed in Islam.
If you tell people that hanging of picture of their Murshid or Awliya Allah or seeing their pictures with respect is haram, then you are doing more harm to the people.  These pictures remind us of our Murshid and this helps us to develop the bond (nisbah) with him all the time.  The bond with our Shaikh  brings us close to Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) spiritually. Remember, it is very difficult to be spiritually close to Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), in the absence of your spiritual bond with your Murshid / spiritual guide.  Keep the thought of your Murshid in your mind, have his picture in front of you and establish close spiritual bond with him.  A good teacher always helps you to achieve your objective of Salvation in Hereafter.  Without a good teacher and proper learning of Islam  under his watchful eyes, it is very difficult to remain on the straight path of Islam.
(2) Some other Ahle Sunnah Muftis are  influenced with Salafi teachings and say that kissing of hands and feet of revered Shaikhs and parents is Haram in Islam.  We have discussed this issue in detail and have proved from Quran and Ahadith that kissing of hands and feet  is Sunnah.
(3) Similarly, some Ahle Sunnah Muftis, influenced with Salafi interpretations of Ahadith, say that kissing or touching of Graves of Awliya Allah and Relics of Prophet and Sahabah is not allowed in Islam.  We have proved from Quran and Sunnah that kissing of relics and graves of Awliya Allah is the tradition of Sahabah.  Denying these actions will amount to claiming that Sahabah were wrong doers.  We want our Ahle Sunnah brothers and sisters to be careful in these issues.
Bahar-e-Shariat (1939) is a voluminous  Urdu book consisting of 20 volumes; 17 of which were written by Mufti Muhammad Amjad Ali Qadri Razvi (رحمتہ اللہ علیہ), a disciple of Ala Hazrat Ahmad Radha Khan (رحمتہ اللہ علیہ) and the remaining three volumes were written/compiled by Mufti Amja Ali Qadri's (رحمتہ اللہ علیہ) disciples.  This books is very popular among Barelvis.  Under "Ashi'atul Lam'aat", Mufti Amjad Ali Qadri (رحمتہ اللہ علیہ) is reported to have written that kissing of graves  is forbidden in Islam. Some people may misunderstand this fatwa and consider that  pious graves of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), Sahaba (رضئ اللھ تعالی عنہم اجمعین ) and Awliya Allah  are included in this fatwa.  In the light of the Ahadith and Quranic verses quoted in this Article, it is evident that  the fatwa is related only to the graves of un-believers and hypocrites who are subjected to punishment in their graves.  Or this Fatwa may imply that out of respect of Awliya Allah, people should stand with respect on the Dargahs and avoid kissing or touching it in a rough manner, without Wudu, to avoid disrespect to these virtuous souls.

Fatawa-e-Alamgiri (also known as Fatawa-i-Hindiya) is a compilation of law created at the instance of  Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb (1618-1707). This book is based on Hanafi School which was compiled by many well known Scholars.  It has 30 volumes and  still serves as the basis of Islamic law in Indian Sub Continent. In Chapter titled 'Ziyaratil Qubur", it is written that  " it does not matter much if someone  kisses the graves of his parents".

Radd al Mukhtar, Fatawa Razvia -  It is mentioned in Fatawa Razvia that it is wise thing that women should be stopped from visiting the graves.  This Fatwa may imply that women should be stopped from visiting the graves of their non-believer relatives and friends.  It may also also imply that women should stay away from mixing with men on Dargahs without proper Hijab.  But to use this Fatwa and ban women from visiting the graves of Muslims, will be inappropriate.

It is in Hadith - Ummul Momineen A'isha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا)  reported that "the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم ) had given permission (to women) to visit graves.' (Sunan Bayhaqi).

Read Visitation of Graves by women

(4) Some Ahle Sunnah scholars, in good faith, say that we should not differentiate Muslims on Sectarian lines and that Sunnis, Salafis and Shias have only differences in certain fiqh issues and as far as Islamic faith is concerned, they are all Muslims.  These kind of statements look good on the face, but these give wrong signals among Muslim Society. The issue of peaceful co-existence is different from uniting people on Correct Islamic Faith.

We have discussed this issue in detail and have concluded that
as far as the concept of peaceful and progressive co-existence in the world is concerned, it is  mandatory on all of us to live in peace and harmony.  We should never wish bad for others, we should never try to hurt others, physically or mentally and we should spread the message of love not only among Muslim sects, but among people of various faiths.

As far as Unity among Muslims sects is concerned, the only way is we should all come back to the straight path of Islam.  This will not only bond us together in this world but also will be helpful for our salvation in Hereafter.  Let us be united in this world as well united in Jannah (Paradise). We should try to achieve both these objectives.
(5) Some Ahle Sunnah Scholars claim that there are 5 correct Islamic schools of thought and whoever follows any one of them is true Muslim.  Shaikh Mahmood Saltoot (1893-1963) Rector of Al-Azhar University, Cairo during 1958-63,  issued a Fatwa in 1959 about the legitimacy of 5 Schools of thought, instead of 4 Schools of thought.  According to this Fatwa, followers of Hanafi Shafi'i, Maliki,  Hanbali and Ja'afari [Shia School of thought - which is also known as 'al-Shia al-Imamiyyah al-Ithna Ashariyyah', i.e., The Twelver Imami Shi'ites]  are all true Muslims.
We have proved in the light of Quran and Ahadith that Shias' basic Islamic faith is different from Ahle Sunnah Wal Jama'a.  When there is no commonality of basic faith, how can we claim that Ja'afari school of thought is also based on Correct Islamic Faith.  We have discussed this issue in detail at another place on our site.
(6) Some Ahle Sunnah Wal Jama'a say that Salafis are in control of Muslims' holy places, ie., Masjid-e-Haram and Masjid-e-Nabawi Sharif, therefore whatever is being practiced there is true Islam.  Therefore, in every aspect of religion, they look to Salafi Scholars for guidance.
Those who talk like this are innocent Muslims.  They are not aware of the history of Islam and they did not have the opportunity to learn true Islam under the guidance of a true Islamic Institution or Shaikh.  We have discussed in detail about Salafi Groups in the world and their religious and have proved, in the light of Quran and Ahadith, that their basic faith is different from truthful Islamic teachings.
It is important for all of us to read all Articles identified in "Links" above as these are related to Sahih Iman.
Sahih Iman is an essential requirement for Salvation.  In Allah's (سبحانہ و تعا لی) court on the Day of Judgment we will be treated as per our faith. If our basic faith is not correct, we are likely to be thrown into hell fire permanently.
