The book 'Insight of the Unseen' (Futuh al-ghaib - فُتوح الغیب) is one of the most famous books of Ghousul Azam Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani (رضئ الله تعالى عنه). It contains 78 sermons that were delivered by him in his Madrasa Qadriyya, Baghdad. The sermons were recorded and later compiled and published by his son Hadhrat Shaikh Isa bin Abdul Qadir (رحمة الله عليه).
The sermons cover various topics, like Tawheed, Knowledge of Truth, (علمِ حقیقی), Divine Attributes, Fiqh, Tasawwuf, etc. It is reported that over seventy thousand people used to listen to these sermons. These sermons had great impact on the listeners.
The need to present Ghousul Azam's (رضئ الله تعالى عنه) work in English in its proper perspective has been felt for a long time as the translations available in the market do not fully satisfy the understanding requirements of our present day generations. This is the reason I took up the task of translating these books in English. I am positive that our English readers will find these translations helpful in understanding Ghousul Azam's (رضئ الله تعالى عنه) teachings and will benefit from them.
The translation has been divided into two parts. Part (A) - consists of sermons from 1 to 39; and Part (B) consists of sermons from 40 to 78.
I pray Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) to accept this translation, like its original work, and increase His beneficence on us. I seek Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) guidance, and Ghousul Azam's (رضئ الله تعالى عنه) to bring out true meanings of these sermons. Allah's peace be upon Mohammad, the last divine apostle for humanity.

INSIGHT OF THE UNSEEN
Who is 'Believer' (مومن)
Three things are essential for a 'Believer' (مومن), as follows.
(i) He should act upon the Islamic Sharia.
(ii) He should refrain from prohibited things.
(iii) He should live in total conformity with his destiny. Meaning, he should have faith that whatever is destined, will surely be given to him.
If a person fulfills the above requirements, it will be considered that he has attained the lowest status of a 'Believer' (مومن). He should make sure that he strives to fulfill these requirements all the time. He should keep all his limbs in the pursuit of these requirements.
Deeds and their Rewards
(O'people) Follow the Sunnah of our Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and stay away from evil innovations. Obey Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). Never transgress from the commandments of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). Have faith in Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and never associate partners with Him. Never have any doubt about Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). Do not slander Him in your ignorance. When you are facing difficulties and hardships in life, be patient. Do not blame Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) for the circumstances which may have been the consequence of your own actions. Be steadfast on the path of Islam. Do not run away from the straight path and involve in evil deeds. Pray sincerely and supplicate Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) to alleviate your difficulties. Do not consider it bad if your supplications are not answered the way you want. Do not get disheartened if your supplications are being delayed. Have faith in Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and wait till your difficulties are over. Do not create enemies among people. Be friendly with them. Keep united in servant-hood of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). Try to achieve your objectives through love and affection. Never indulge in hate and jealousy. Do not commit sins. Avoid sin as far as possible. Enlighten yourself from the servant-hood of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). Do not go away from the door of servant-hood. Keep your focus on Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) all the time. Hasten in repentance for your past sins. Do not feel it a burden to seek repentance from Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ).
If you keep doing good deeds, His mercy will turn towards you and you will be saved from the Hell fire and awarded with Paradise. There is a chance that you will be rewarded with the proximity to Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). In Paradise you will get special beneficence of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and provided with virtuous mates. You may be given beautiful horses to ride and servants to serve in your paradise palaces. Most importantly, at the time of your death, you will have the company of virtuous souls of honest (صِدِْ يقين) and martyred (شُهدا) Muslims .
Trials and their alleviation
When the Servant (بندہ) is surrounded by trials and afflictions, he tries to come out of them by his individual efforts. When he does not succeed, he approaches the rich and the people in power for help. And if he is suffering from some ailment, he approaches medical doctors.
Till he has confidence in himself and his individual efforts, he does not approach others. And till he hopes to get help from others, he does not turn towards his Creator. But when he does not get help from his Creator, he starts praying and supplicates and laments in front of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). In this situation it is said that he is in the 'state of hope and fear' (بیم و رِجاء). He continues in this state for some time and when he does not succeed by his prayers and becomes helpless, the divine 'decree and fate' (قضا و قدر) gets manifested upon him. He becomes disconnected from all resources and gets subordinated to 'divine intention' (منشاء الٰہی). His 'self' gets annihilated and the existence of God overtakes his dependent existence. In this state, he does not see anything except the commandments of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). He realizes, only Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) as active. He comes to know Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is the creator of good and bad, profit and loss and mobility and immobility. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is the one who gives or does not give. He is the one who provides respect or disdain. He is the one who gives life and death. In this state the servant becomes like a new born in the hands of the midwife, a dead body in the hands of the bathing person or the ball in the hands of a polo player.
The servant knows that it is not in his hand to move from one state to another or from one deed to another. His deeds get annihilated in divine deeds. He starts seeing from the vision of Almighty, talks and listens from His beneficence, knowledge, and speech. He is not willing to listen to anything other than Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). He gets closer to Almighty and benefits from His bounties. He gets peace and tranquility in Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) commandments and promises. He gets solace in the recitation of Epithets of Allah (اسماء الہیہ). He gets dreaded from the thought of other than Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). Now he gets to know the facts of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and is awarded with gnosis (معرِفت). He starts expressing gratitude to Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and spends his life in divine praise and glorification.
Sermon (4)The state of annihilation and spiritual progress
When the servant disassociate himself from the creatures, it is said to him 'let Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) mercy be on you'. And when his material wishes become dead, it is said to him, 'let Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) mercy be on you'. And when all his personal intentions and material wishes are annihilated, it is said to him, 'let Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) mercy be on you'. After it the servant gets an infinite life in which there is no concept of death. He gets the wealth of contentment after which there is no exigency. He gets the kind of solace and peace after which there is no sorrow or remorse. He gets the knowledge of heart after which there no illiteracy left. He is protected from all dangers and troubles, and his illusion of ill luck and fear are removed from him. He gets the kind of respect after which there is no scope of dishonor. He is rewarded with the proximity with Almighty after which there is no scope for going away from Him. He gets the status and dignity and is protected from lowliness and disrepute. He is cleansed from all possible filth.
At this stage, the servant will become unique and lovable by all people. No one will be able to assess his status among Awliya. He will become exceptional and rare phenomenon of the secrets and knowledge of unseen. He will become the inheritor of the martyres and prophets. He will be awarded with a state in Wilaya looking at which all Substitutes (ابدال) will turn towards him for help. In view of his graceful presence, hardships of the people will be removed. The rain will fall in abundance with which plentiful grains and fruits will be yielded from the horticultural fields. The difficulties of all kinds of people, like kings, subjects, the leaders, people in power and general public will be alleviated from his supplication. He will be the caretaker of the people. Hoards of people will come to him from far of places and place their wealth in his feet and would like to serve him in any manner they could. No one will dispute in his greatness and magnanimity. This kind of individual is the best among people. He is rewarded abundantly from the mercy of Allah (سبحانه و تعالى).
Sermon (5)Worldly comforts are negligible
When you see worldly people ensnared by the deceptive looks of their material comforts and entrapped by their comforts' glare; do not glance desiring look on them. Move away from them as fast as you can, because these comforts are extremely poisonous in nature. When you see people who have forgotten Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and are overwhelmed by material comforts, consider them like a person who is naked and is attending the call of nature, defecating and urinating.
What you do when you see a person who is attending the call of nature openly? When you spot a person in this position, you will close your eyes and nose and run away from that place.
Similarly, when you see forgetful people involved in worldly comforts, close your eyes and nose so that their behavior and environment does not hurt you. This is the only way to remain safe from the worldly tribulations and calamities. And remember, whatever good is destined for you, surely it will come and you will be benefited by it.
[And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to (some) categories of them, (its being but) the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.] (Taa Haa - 131).
Sermon (6)Who are Awliya Allah
Pray Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) to seize you away from the creatures. Subject your wishes to His commandments and subdue your intentions to divine 'will'. This way you will be entrusted to act as per the will of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). To get annihilated from the creatures means, you should disassociate yourself from them as well as disaffiliate from everything which is related to them. To get subordinated to Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) commandments means, you should not trust your ability or the material resources to do any good or harm to youself, except Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). You should leave all your issues to Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). If you trust your own self, rather than Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), this will be treated as polytheism. When you were in the womb of your mother or when you were the infant in cradle, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) took care of all your needs. So remember, even now He will take care of all your needs.
To subordinate your 'intentions' to the 'Will of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) means relinquish all carnal desires, materialistic motivations, worldly requirements and initiatives for worldly gains and subject them to the commandments of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). If you do not wish anything other than Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), then in view of your relinquishing all desires, you will witness how Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) takes care of all your needs. This way your limbs will be at rest, your heart will feel tranquility, your face will glow reflecting the peace within you, and your conscience will get composure and overall, you will feel fully satisfied. Your connection with Almighty will relieve you from everything else in this cosmos and you will feel contented. Yo will be helped by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) in all your needs. You will addressed and taught by your Lord. He will explain you the facts of things in this Cosmos. You will be provided with cognizance of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). This way you will reach to the stations of virtuous and people of gnoses. Like the water does not stay in a damaged container, your heart will also get devoid of worldly wishes and worldly intentions. You will be purified by the physical desires. Your heart will contain nothing but remembrance of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). This is the stage when marvels appear from people and they are rewarded with certain exclusive spiritual rewards. People will notice these extra-ordinary things in you, but, in fact, these will be precepts and His works. You will join the ranks of Awliya Allah who do not have any material wishes and worldly intentions. They will be rewarded with certain virtuous inclines. It is in Hadith, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said, three things have been given to me, liking for fragrance, women and coolness of my eyes is in Salah. Prophets are innocent and sinless. These things were associated with Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) on Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) behest. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) said, 'I am with them, who are not the slaves of the desires of their self (نفس). Therefore, till your desires and intentions are not annihilated in the pursuit of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), you will not get the proximity to Almighty. After all your wishes have been eliminated, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) will create you again with intrinsic virtues and will create new intentions in you. If He realize that your 'self' (نفس) got involved with these new intentions, then He will break those intentions again and create new ones. For the humility of your heart, the end of these stages will come when unification of Allah will get established in your heart and you will witness your Lord.
