Shaykh Muhammad Fayd Ahmed Owaisi ®
Allama Mufti Mohammad Faiz Ahmed Owaisi ® was well known Mufassir, Muhaddith, Muffakir and Scholar of Ahle Sunnah who has written thousands of books / booklets / papers, many of which are still under publication.
His name and family stature
Shaykh al-Hadith Wa al-Tafsir, al-Imam, al-'Allama, al-Muhaddith, al-Sufi: Abu al-Salih Muhammad Fayd Ahmad Ibn Nur Ahmad Ibn Hamid Ibn Kamal al-'Abbasi al-Uwaysi al-Ridawi.
He is connected to the Caste of "Laar" by ancestry, and is Hanafi in Fiqh and Uwaysi Qadiri Ridawi in Tasawwuf. His ancestry reaches the Uncle of our Master Muhammad , Sayyiduna 'Abbas . It is interesting to see the inheritance in the knowledge of Tafsir from his grand ancestor Sayyiduna 'Abdullah Ibn 'Abbas transfer on to Shaykh al-Uwaysi, who is also fondly recognised in Pakistan and other parts of the Muslim world as "al-Mufassir al-A'dham".
Birth date and place
Shaykh al-Uwaysi was born in 1351 AH, corresponding to 1932 AD, in a small unpopular village called District Rahim Yar Khan. Shaykh al-Uwaysi changed the name of the village to HamidAbad, in honour of Imam Ahmad Rida's eldest son and his own late grandfather. Needless to say, this town is now famous by this name and is very well known.
Shaykh al-Uwaysi began his initial training with his father Mawlana Nur Ahmad at the age of five. He completed the reading of the Qur'an by direct visual recital at the age of seven and then entered a Comprehensive School. 1942, he completed five stages in Educa tion, when his father desired that he complete memorisation of the Qur'an (Hifzdh al-Qur'an) with Hafiz Jaan Muhammad Sahib. Due to non-scheduled or independent individual training, the Shaykh was only able to complete eight parts (Juz) of the Qur'an in one and a half years.
He then went to the Khanqah Jeet Bata, where he served the great scholar Mawlana Hafiz Siraj Ahmad. In another one and a half years he completed further eighteen parts of the Qur'an with him, this was again due to irregularity and class times.
In 1947 he completed the memorisation of the Qur'an with Mawlana Ghulam Yasin in Khayrpur, District Bhawalpur. In the same year he recited the Qur'an while leading the Tarawih Prayers at Khanpur Katura, and on the 27th night of that Ramadan Pakistan came in to existence. In September that year, Shaykh al-Uwaysi began his mastery over Persian and studied the famous work of Imam al-Sa'di; Pandnama Sa'di.
In 1948, he studied Zulaykha Sikandar with Mawlana Allah Baksh and, near the end of the year, he studied Arabic Syntax and Etymology (al-Sarf wa al-Nahw) at the service of Mawlana KhurRashid Ahmad. He studied al-Hidaya, Mukhtasar al-Ma'ani and Sharh al-Jami, while he also continued to teach the same books in his village. He completed the remainder of the texts from the renowned Nizami Syllabus with Ustad al-'Ulama Mawlana 'Abd al-Karim.
After completion of the Nizami Syllabus in 1951, Shaykh al-Uwaysi enrolled at Laylpur University, al-Jam'ia al-Ridawiyya. In 1952, corresponding to 1371 AH, Shaykh al-Uwaysi graduated at the blessed hands of the greatest Muhaddith of Pakistan, Imam Abu al-Fadl Muhammad Sardar Ahmad al-Qadiri, who dressed him with the Turban of the Graduate Scholars and blessed him with his Chain of Transmission (Sanad).
To begin his training in Suluk, he gave his Sufi pledge of allegiance to Khawaja Muhammad al-Din al-Sayrani. Khawaja Muhammad al-Din was the spiritual heir to the Grand Shaykh of the Silsila, Shaykh Muhkam al-Din al-Sayrani. Shaykh Muhkam al-Din was a warrior saint and a man of great spiritual unveiling (Kashf). He was given the title al-Sayrani, which means to travel pass because he was constantly in the motion of travelling. He was poisoned in Gujarat, India, 1197 AH after no more than three attempts. At the first and second attempt, Shaykh Muhkam al-Din responded that it was not his time to die yet, at the third he said it was now time, and he paid for his burial arrangements. His blessed place of remembrance is at Khanqah Sharif, District Bhawalpur, while his blessed shrine (Mizar) is situated at Duraji, Kathiawar, India.
In 1381 AH, after the demise of Khawaja Muhammad al-Din al-Sayrani, Shaykh al-Uwaysi gave the pledge of allegiance to the Mufti A'dham Bi al-Diyar al-Hindiyya, Imam Mustafa Rida Khan, the son of the Imam of Ahl al-Sunnah, the grand Mujaddid of his time, Ahmad Rida Khan al-Baraylawi. Imam Mustafa, not only accepted the pledge from Shaykh al-Uwaysi, but also issued him with a special permission for the Silsila Qadiriyya Ridawiyya in writing.
Shaykh al-Uwaysi's literary service to Islam
Shaykh al-Uwaysi began his writing and authorship during his days as astudent. His first work was "Beneficial Issues: Part 1". Today his works number over five thousand. He has written works in five languages which have been accepted among the people; Urdu, Arabic, Persian, Sara'iki and Sindhi. His most popular works are, however, in the Urdu and Arabic languages.
In 1952, he opened an Arabic-based institute in his village of HamidAbad by the name of "Madrassa Manba' al-Fuyudh". Numerous scholars of the first class from Bangladesh, Pakistan and India have graduated and became Muhaddith, Mufti, Mudarris and Hafiz, and carried the Uwaysi light towards their countries.
In 1963, Shaykh al-Uwaysi laid the foundations of the University of al-Uwaysiyya in Bhawalpur (al-Jami'a al-Uwaysiyya) and the Grand Masjid al-Sayrani. It is to today a leading authority on all religious matters within Pakistan, and holds high esteem internationally for its Islamic research foundation and education.
Shaykh Fayd Ahmad al-Uwaysi has so far written on forty different sciences, which them self branch in to further numerous semi-topics or semi-sciences in their own right. A book has been combined to record every work and its date, including numerous unpublished manuscripts.
The below is just an example of the kinds of works he has been committed to achieve, Allah lengthen the shade of his knowledge and spiritual presence over us for ever longer. Amin.
