CHAPTER (1)

What has been related about the walking on the Day of Eid

Jami at-Tirmidhi, Vol 1,  Bk 4,  Hadith # 1

Ali bin Abi Talib (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that it is from the Sunnah to leave for the Eid walking, and to eat something before leaving.

Imam Tirmidhi said this is a Hasan Hadith.  This is acted upon according to most of the people of knowledge.  They consider it recommended for a man to leave for Salat al-Eid walking.  Imam Tirmidhi said (and it is recommend) that one does not ride except with an excuse.

Ibn Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), Abu Bakr, and Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہما) would pray during the two Eid first, then they would give the Khutbah.

There are narrations on this topic from Jabir and Ibn Abbas Imam Tirmidhi said the Hadith of Ibn Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) is Hasan Sahih Hadith.  This is acted upon according to the people of knowledge among the companions of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and others.  The Salah for the two Eid is before the Khutbah.  It is said that the first man to give the Khutbah before the Salat al-Eid was Marwan bin Al-Hakam.

Explanation

Marwan bin Al-Hakam was the Governor of Madina and he used to curse and insult Hadhrat Ali (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) and Ahle Bait-e-At Haar in his sermons. The reason why he started giving Khutbah before Eid Salah was,  he wanted people to hear the curse and abuse of Hadhrat Ali He knew that if the Salah is conducted first, people will leave to their homes avoiding listening to the curse and abuse of Hadhrat Ali

Public curse and insult of Hadhrat Ali (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) was officially sponsored during the reign of  Muawiya (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) which continued for several decades after his death. For over 65 years, between 657 and 720 the curse was an official Government policy.  During this period, Hadhrat Ali (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) was cursed and insulted at public platforms and Juma and Eid sermons in Government controlled mosques all over the Islamic State.

Amir bin Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) reported on the authority of his father that Muawiya Ibn Abi Sufyan ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) appointed Sa’d ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) as the Governor and said : What prevents you from abusing Abu Turab (Hadrat ‘Ali  رضئ الله تعالی عنه ), whereupon he said : It is because of three things which I remember Allah’s Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) having said about him that I would not abuse him and even if I find one of those three things for me, it would be more dear to me than the red camel. I heard Allah’s Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) say about ‘Ali ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) as he left behind him in one of his campaigns (Tabuk). ‘Ali ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) said to him: Allah’s Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), you leave me behind along with women and children. Thereupon Allah’s Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said to him: Aren’t you satisfied that you are to me  like Haroon ( عليه السلام ) was to Musa ( عليه السلام ) but with this exception that there is no prophet after me. And I (also) heard him say on the Day of Khaibar : I would certainly give this standard (banner) to a person who loves Allah and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and Allah and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) love him too. He (the narrator) said : We had been anxiously waiting for it, when he (the Apostle - صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : Call Ali ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ). He was called and his eyes were inflamed (red). He applied (his) saliva to Ali's ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) eyes and handed over the standard (banner) to him, and Allah gave him victory. (The third occasion) When the (following) verse was revealed - تَعَالَوْا نَدْعُ أَبْنَاءَنَا وَأَبْنَاءَكُمْ  [ Let us summon our children and your children.] (Aal-e-Imran - 61). Allah’s Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) called Ali, Fatima, Hassan and Husain ( رضئ الله تعالی عنهم اجمعين ) and said : O'Allah, they are my family. (Sahih Muslim - Book 31, Hadith # 5915)

Qurtubi in his book Al-Mufhem, Vol 20 page 25 wrote -  وقول معاوية لسعد بن أبي وقاص : ما منعك أن تسب أبا تراب ؛ يدل : على أن مقدم بني أمية كانوا يسبون عليا وينتقصونه  [ The statement of Mu’awiya ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه )  to Sa’d bin Abi Waqas ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) 'what prevents you from cursing Abu Turab (رضئ الله تعالی عنه )' indicates that the first generation of Bani Umayya were abusing and insulting Hadhrat Ali ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) openly (in mosques and public places).]

Ibn Tamiyah wrote in his Minhaj as-Sunnah, Vol. 5, page 42 - وأما حديث سعد لما أمره معاوية بالسب فأبى [While the narration about Sa'd ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) (relates to) when Muawiya (رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) ordered him (Sa'd رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) to curse Hadhrat Ali ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ), but he refused.]

There is another version of the above Hadith recorded by  Ibn Hajar Asqalani in Fath-ul-Bari, Sharah Sahih Bukhari, Vol 7, Chapter 'Manaqib-e-Hadhrat Ali

Sa'd (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said : Even if a saw was placed on my neck to abuse Hadhrat Ali (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), I would not do so.

(ii) Ibn Kathir recorded the following Hadith :

When Mu’awiya ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) went for Hajj, he held the hand of Sa’d bin Abi Waqas ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) and said to him: ‘Oh Abi Ishaq ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه )! We are the people who abandoned Hajj because of wars until we almost forgot some of its rules, so we performed Tawaf to imitate your Tawaf’. When they completed (Hajj), he (Muawiya رضئ الله تعالی عنه) entered upon him (Sa’d رضئ الله تعالی عنه) in a conference room and sat with him on his sofa, then he (Muawiya رضئ الله تعالی عنه) mentioned Ali bin Abi Talib ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) and cursed him. He (Sa’d -  رضئ الله تعالی عنه) said : 'You brought me to your house and made me sit on your sofa and then you have begun to curse Ali (رضئ الله تعالی عنه)? (Al-Bidaya wa al-Nihayah, Vol 7, Chapter 'Virtues of Hadhrat Ali ).

(iii) It is in Hadith - Ibn Sa'd Umair bin Is-haq narrated : 'Marwan was our ruler (appointed as Governor of Madina by Muawiya - رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ). He used to accuse and abuse Hadhrat Ali  (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) every Friday from the Menber of the Mosque (Masjid-e-Nabawi).  Hadhrat Hassan (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) used to listen to this slang but he never replied.  One day, Marwan sent a person to Hadhrat Hassan (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) with a message that the example of Hadhrat Ali (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) and Hadhrat Hassan (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) was like Mule.  When a mule is asked as to who was his father, it says my mother was a Mare (Female Horse). After listening to this abuse and insult, Hadhrat Hassan  (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) told the person to go and inform Marwan that 'I will not abuse him in retaliation because it may help him to lessen the evil from his record of deeds.  Hadhrat Hassan  (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) further said, Allah will decide between him and Marwan on the day of Judgment.  If Marwan is truthful, let Allah provide him recompense (thawaab).  And if he is a liar, then Allah will give him the severest of the punishments'.  (Jalaluddin Suyuti recorded this Hadith in Tariq al-Khulafa).

CHAPTER (3)

What has been related about the Salah for the two Eid is without an Adhan or Iqama

Jami at-Tirmidhi, Vol 1,  Bk 4,  Hadith #3

Jabir bin Samurah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that he prayed the two Eid prayers with the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) - not one time, not two times - without and Adhan or an Iqamah.

Imam Tirmidhi said the Hadith of Jabir bin Abdullah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) is a Hasan Sahih Hadith and it is acted upon according to the people of knowledge among the companions of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and others.  There are narrations on this topic from Jabir bin Abdullah and Ibn Abbas There is no Adhan called for the two Eid prayers nor is there any voluntary prayers (associated with it).

CHAPTER (4)

What has been related about the recitation during the Two Eid

Jami at-Tirmidhi, Vol 1,  Bk 4,  Hadith # 4

An-Numan bin Bashir (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that for the two Eid and the Friday prayer, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) would recite -  سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الأَعْلَى  [Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High] and [Has there come to you the narration of the overwhelming?] (Al-Ghaashiya) And sometimes they would occur on the same day, so he would recite the two of them."

There are narrations on this topic from Abu Waqid, Samurah bin Jundub and Ibn Abbas Imam Tirmidhi said the Hadith of An-Numan bin Bashir () is a Hasan Sahih Hadith.  Sufyan Ath-Thawri and Misar reported the same Hadith as Abu Awanah did from Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Al-Muntashir.  As for Sufyan bin Uyainah, the narrators from him differ about what they narrated from him.  For it has been reported from him from Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Al-Muntashir from his father from Habin bin Salim from his father, from An-Numan bin Bashir (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) and we do not know of Habib bin Bashir.  And we do not know of Habib bin Salim narrating from his father.  Rather, Habib bin Salim was the freed slave of An-Numan bin Bashir (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) and he reports Ahadith from An-Numan bin Bashir (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ).  And it has been reported from Ibn Uyiana from Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Al-Muntashir, similar to the narration of these people.  And it has been reported from the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) that he would recite for the two Eid - ق [Qaf ]  and  ‏اقْتَرَبَتِ السَّاعَةُ [The Hour has drawn near] (Al-Qamar) and this is the view of Ash-Shafii.

Jami at-Tirmidhi, Vol 1,  Bk 4,  Hadith # 5

Ubaidullah bin Abdullah bin Utbah narrated that Umar bin Al-Khattab (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) asked Abu Waqid Al-Laithi (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) what the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) would recite during Al-Fitr and Al-Adha, so he said : 'He would recite - ‏ق والقرآنِ الْمَجِيدِ  [ Qaf, By the Glorious Quran],  and - ‏اقْتَرَبَتِ السَّاعَةُ وَانْشَقَّ الْقَمَرُ [The Hour has drawn near and the moon has been cleft asunder].

Imam Tirmidhi said this Hadith is Hasan Sahih.

Jami at-Tirmidhi, Vol 1,  Bk 4,  Hadith # 6

There is a another chain with similar narration.

Imam Tirmidhi said Abu Waqid Al-Laithi's name is Al-Harith bin Awf.

CHAPTER (5)

What has been related about the Takbir about the two Eid

Jami at-Tirmidhi, Vol 1,  Bk 4,  Hadith # 7

Kathir bin Abdullah narrated from this father, from his grandfather that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said (for Salat al-Eid) the Takbir in the first (Rak'a) seven (times) before the recitation, and in the last, five (times) before the recitation.

There are narrations on this topic from Ummul Momineen Aisha, Ibn Umar, and Abdullah bin Amr Imam Tirmidhi said the Hadith of Kathir's grandfather is a Hasan Hadith and it is the best thing reported on this topic from the Prophet His name is Amr bin Awf Al-Muzani.  This is acted upon according to some of the people of knowledge among the companions of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and others.  It is reported that Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) performed similar prayer in Al-Madina and it is the view of Malik bin Anas, Ash-Shafii, Ahmad and Ishaq (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہم).  It has been reported that Ibn Masud (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said about the Takbir for the two Eid : Nine Takbir;  in the first Raka there are five before the recitation and in the second one begins with the recitation, then he says four Takbir with the Takbir of Ruku.  A similar opinion has been related from more than one of the companions of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and it is the view of the people of Kufa and it is the opinion of Sufyan Ath-Thawri.

CHAPTER (6)

What has been related about there is no Salah before the two Eid and no Salah after them

Jami at-Tirmidhi, Vol 1,  Bk 4,  Hadith # 8

Ibn Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that the  Prophet went out on the day of Al-Fitr, and  prayed two Rak'a, then he did not pray before it nor after it.

There are narrations on this topic from Abdullah bin Umar, Abdullah bin Amr and Abu Sa'id Imam Tirmidhi said the Hadith of Ibn Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) is Hasan Sahih Hadith and it is acted upon according to some of the people of knowledge among the companions of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and others and it is the view of Ash-Shafii, Ahmad and Ishaq.  A group of the people of knowledge among the companions of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and others thought one could pray after the two Eid prayers and before them and the first view is more correct.

Jami at-Tirmidhi, Vol 1,  Bk 4,  Hadith # 9

Abu Bakr bin Hafs - and he is Ibn Umar bin Sa'd bin Abi Waqas - narrated about Ibn Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that he went out on the day of Eid, and he did not pray before it nor after it. He mentioned that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) did so.

Imam Tirmidhi said this Hadith is Hasan Sahih.

CHAPTER (7)

What has been related about women going for (Salah) of two Eid

Jami at-Tirmidhi, Vol 1,  Bk 4,  Hadith # 10

Umm Atiyyah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) would order the virgins, the mature women, the secluded and the menstruating to go out for the two Eid. As for the menstruating women, they were to stay away from the Musalla and participate in the Muslims supplications.' One of them said : 'O Apostle of Allah What if she does not have a Jilbab (Chador) ? He said: 'Then let her sister lend her a Chador.'

Jami at-Tirmidhi, Vol 1,  Bk 4,  Hadith # 11

There is a similar narration from Umm Atiyyah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا), with another chain.

There are narrations on this topic from Ibn Abbas and Jabir Imam Tirmidhi said the Hadith of Umm Atiyyah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) is a Hasan Sahih Hadith.  Some of the people of knowledge followed this Hadith, permitting the women to go out to the two Eid.  However, some of them disliked it.  It has been reported that Abdullah bin Al-Mubarak said, today it is disliked for the women to go out for the two Eid.  If a woman insists on going out, then her husband should permit her to go out in her modest clothing without any adornments but if she refuses to go out like that, then her husband is to prevent her from leaving. It is reported that Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) said, If Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) saw what has happened to the women, then he would prevent them from going to the mosque just as the women of the children of Israil were prevented.  It has been reported that Sufyan Ath-Thawri disliked the women of today to go out for the Eid.

Jami at-Tirmidhi, Vol 1,  Bk 4,  Hadith # 12

Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)  would go out on the day of Eid by one route and return by another.

There are narrations on this topic from Abdullah bin Umar and Abu Rafi Imam Tirmidhi said, the Hadith of Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) is a Hasan Gharib Hadith.  Abu Tumailah and Yunus bin Muhammad reported this Hadith from Fulaih bin Sulaiman from Sa'id bin Al-Harith from Jabir bin Abdullah.  He said, some of the people of knowledge consider it recommended that when the Imam goes by one route, he returns by another adhering to this Hadith.  This is the view of Ash-Shafii.  It is as if the Hadith of Jabir is more correct.

CHAPTER (9)

What has been related about eating on the day of Fitr before going out (for Salah)

Jami at-Tirmidhi, Vol 1,  Bk 4,  Hadith # 13

Abdullah bin Buraidah narrated from his father : 'The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) would not leave on the Day of Fitr until he ate, and he would not eat on the day of Adha until he prayed.'

There are narrations on this topic from Ali and Anas Imam Tirmidhi said the Hadith of Buraidah bin Husaib Al-Aslami is a Gharib Hadith.  Muhammad said, he does not know of a Hadith from Thawab bin Utbah other than this.  There are those among the people of knowledge who consider it recommended that one should not go out on the day of Fitr until he has eaten something.  It is recommended that dates are used for that.  They also recommend that he does not eat on the day of Adha until he returns.

Jami at-Tirmidhi, Vol 1,  Bk 4,  Hadith # 14

Anas bin Malik (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) would have a breakfast of dates on the Day of Fitr before leaving for the Musalla.'

Imam Tirmidhi said this Hadith is Hasan Sahih Gharib.
