CHAPTER (1)

How the Adhan began

Nafi' narrated that 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) used to say: "When the Muslims arrived in Madinah they used to gather and try to figure out the time for prayer, and no one gave the call to prayer. One day they spoke about that; some of them said: 'Let us use a bell like the Christians do;' others said, 'No, a horn like the Jews have.' 'Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ)  said : 'Why don't you send a man to announce the time of prayer?' The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said: 'O Bilal (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) get up and give the call to prayer.'"

CHAPTER (2)

Saying the phrases  of the Adhan twice

It was narrated that Anas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said : "The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) commanded Bilal (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) to say the phrases of the Adhan twice and the phrases of the Iqamah once."

It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said : "At the time of the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) the phrases of the Adhan were said twice and the phrases of the Iqamah were said once, except that you should say -  قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلاَةُ  ' قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلاَةُ ‏  [prayer is about to begin, prayer is about to begin]."

CHAPTER (3)

Lowering the voice when saying some pharases of the Adhan the second time

It was narrated from Abu Mahdhura (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) sat him down and taught him the Adhan letter by letter. (One of the narrators) Ibrahim said, "It is like this Adhan of ours". I said : "Recite it to me." He said,  اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ - [Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest], أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ -  [I bear witness that there is there is no God except Allah] - twice. Then  -  أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ  [ I bear witness that Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah] - twice. Then he said in a lower voice which those around him could here -  أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ  [I bear witness that there is there is no God except Allah] - twice.  أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ[ I bear witness that Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah] - twice. Then - حَىَّ عَلَى الصَّلاَةِ [come to prayer] - twice;  حَىَّ عَلَى الْفَلاَحِ - [come to prosperity] - twice;  اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ  [Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no God except Allah].

CHAPTER (4)

How many phrases are there in the Adhan

It was narrated from Abu Mahdhura (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Apostle  of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) taught him the Adhan with nineteen phrases and the Iqimah with seventeen phrases, then Abu Mahdhura (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) counted them as nineteen and seventeen.

CHAPTER (5)

How is the wording of the Adhan

It was narrated that Abu Mahdhura (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said : "The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) taught me the Adhan and said -  اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ [ Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; I bear witness that there is no God except Allah, I bear witness that there is no God except Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Apostle Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Apostle Allah)'. Then he repeated it and said -  أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ حَىَّ عَلَى الصَّلاَةِ حَىَّ عَلَى الصَّلاَةِ حَىَّ عَلَى الْفَلاَحِ حَىَّ عَلَى الْفَلاَحِ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ [ I bear witness that there is no God except Allah, I bear witness that there is no God except Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Apostle  of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah; Come to prayer, come to prayer; come to prosperity, come to prosperity; Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; there is no God except Allah].'"

'Abdul-'Aziz bin 'Abdul-Malik bin Abu Mahdhurah narrated that 'Abdullah bin Muhairiz - who was an orphan under the care of Abu Mahdhurah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) until he prepared him to go to Syria - informed him : he said : "I said to Abu Mahdhurah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) : 'I am going to Syria and I am afraid that I will be asked about how you say the Adhan." 'He told me that Abu Mahdhurah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said to him, I went out with a group of people and we were somewhere on the road to Hunain when the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) was coming back from Hunain. The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) met us somewhere on the road and the Muadh-dhin of the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) called the Adhan for prayer in the presence of the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). We heard the voice of the Muadh-dhin and we were careless about it (the Adhan), so we started yelling, imitating and mocking it. The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) heard us, so he sent some people who brought us to stand in front of him. He said, 'Who is the one whose voice I heard so loud?' The people all pointed to me, and they were telling the truth. He sent them all away, but kept me there and said to me: 'Stand up and call the Adhan for the Prayer.' I stood up and the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) taught me the Adhan himself. He Said, 'Say -   اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ [ Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; I bear witness that there is no God except Allah, I bear witness that there is no God except Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Apostle Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Apostle  Allah] .' Then he said: 'Then repeat and say in a loud voice -  أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ حَىَّ عَلَى الصَّلاَةِ حَىَّ عَلَى الصَّلاَةِ حَىَّ عَلَى الْفَلاَحِ حَىَّ عَلَى الْفَلاَحِ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ [ I bear witness that there is no God except Allah, I bear witness that there is no God except Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah; Come to prayer, come to prayer; come to prosperity, come to prosperity; Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; there is no God except Allah].' Then he called me when I had finished saying the Adhan, and he gave me a bundle in which there was some silver. I said : 'O Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), let me be the one doing the Adhan in Makkah.' He said : 'I command you to do so.' Then I came to 'Attab bin Asid (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) who was the governor of the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) in Makkah and I called the Adhan for prayer with him upon the orders of the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)."

CHAPTER (6)

The Adhan when traveling

It was narrated that Abu Mahdhurah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said: "When the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) left Hunain, I was the tenth of a group of ten of the people of Makkah who were trying to catch up with them. We heard them calling the Adhan for the prayer and we started to repeat the Adhan, mocking them. The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said, 'I heard among these people the Adhan of one who has a beautiful voice.' He sent for us, and we recited the Adhan one by one, and I was the last of them. When I said the Adhan, he said : 'Come here.' He sat me down in front of him and rubbed my forelock and blessed me three times, then he said, 'Go and give the Adhan at the sacred House.' I said : 'How, O Apostle of Allah He taught me as you say the Adhan now - اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ حَىَّ عَلَى الصَّلاَةِ حَىَّ عَلَى الصَّلاَةِ حَىَّ عَلَى الْفَلاَحِ حَىَّ عَلَى الْفَلاَحِ الصَّلاَةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ الصَّلاَةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ ‏  [Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; I bear witness that there is no God except Allah, I bear witness that there is no God except Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Apostle Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Apostle Allah; I bear witness that there is no God  except Allah, I bear witness that there is no God except Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah; Come to prayer, come to prayer; come to prosperity, come to prosperity; prayer is better than sleep, prayer is better than sleep - in the first (Adhan) for As-Subh (Fajr) ]. And he taught me the Iqamah saying each phrase twice -  اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ حَىَّ عَلَى الصَّلاَةِ حَىَّ عَلَى الصَّلاَةِ حَىَّ عَلَى الْفَلاَحِ حَىَّ عَلَى الْفَلاَحِ قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلاَةُ قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلاَةُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ ‏"‏ [ Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; I bear witness that there is no God except Allah, I bear witness that there is no God except Allah ; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah; Come to prayer, come to prayer; come to prosperity, come to prosperity; the prayer is about to begin, the prayer is about to begin, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; there is no God except Allah].   (One of the narrators) Ibn Juraij said : ''Uthman narrated this whole report to me from his father and from Umm 'Abdul Malik bin Abi Mahafirah, and (said that) they heard that from Abu Mahdhurah

CHAPTER (7)

The Adhan of two who are alone on a journey

It was narrated that Malik bin Al-Huwairith (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said : "I came to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) with a cousin of mine" - on an another occasion he said : "with a companion of mine" - "and he said: 'When the two of you travel, call the Adhan and the Iqamah, and let the older of you lead the prayer.'"

CHAPTER (8)

The Adhan of someone else is sufficient while a resident

It was narrated that Malik bin Al-Huwairith (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said: "We came to the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and we were young men close in age. He let us stay with him for twenty days. The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) was merciful and compassionate and he thought that we were missing our families; he asked us about those whom we had left behind of our families, so we told him, and he said: 'Go back to your families, stay with them and teach them. Tell them when the time for prayer comes; let one of you call the Adhan and let the oldest of you lead the prayer.'"

It was narrated from Ayyub, from Abu Qilabah, from 'Amr bin Salamah : "Abu Qilabah said to me (Ayyub) : He ('Amr - رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) is still alive, do you want to meet him?" I met him and asked him, and he said: "When Makka was conquered, all the people hastened to announce their Islam. My father went to announce the Islam of the people of our village, and when he came back we went to see him and he said : 'By Allah, I have indeed come to you from the Apostle of Allah He said : 'Pray such and such  prayer at such and such  time, pray such and such  prayer at such and such  time. When the time for prayer comes let one of you call the Adhan and let the one who knows the Qur'an more lead the prayer.'"

CHAPTER (9)

Two Muadh-dhins in one Masjid

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said :"Bilal (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) calls the Adhan during the night, so eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktum (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) calls (the Adhan)"

Sunan an-Nasai, Vol 1, Bk 7, Hadith # 13

It was narrated from Salim, from his father, that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said: "Bilal (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) calls the Adhan during the night, so eat and drink until you hear Ibn Umm Maktoom (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) calling the Adhan."

CHAPTER (10)

Should they call the Adhan together or separately?

It was narrated that  Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) said :"The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : 'Bilal (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) calls the Adhan during the night, so eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktum (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) calls the Adhan." She said : "And there was no more time between them than the time it takes for one to come down and the other to go up."

It was narrtaed from Khubaib bin 'Abdur-Rahman that his paternal aunt Unaisa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) said: "The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : 'When Ibn Umm Maktum (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) calls the Adhan, eat and drink, and when Bilal (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) calls the Adhan, do not eat nor drink."

Explanation

The Ahadith of Bilal (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) giving Adhan earlier than Umm Maktum (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) are numerous.  Therefore, it is probable that the above Hadith also means the same as many other Ahadith in several books of Ahadith in this context.  Umm Maktum (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) was blind and required someone to tell him that it was morning and he has to call for the prayer.

CHAPTER (11)

The Adhan at times other than the time for prayer

It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said: "Bilal (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) calls the Adhan during the night to wake those who are sleeping and so that those who are praying Qiyam can return. Not to say it is like this". The break of dawn is not like this.

CHAPTER (12)

The time for the Adhan for Fajr

It was narrated from Anas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that someone asked the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) about the time of Subh. The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) commanded Bilal (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) to call the Adhan when dawn broke, then the next day he delayed Fajr until it was very light, then he told him to call the Adhan and he prayed. Then he said : "This is the time for the prayer."

CHAPTER (13)

What should the Muadh-dhin do while calling the Adhan

It was narrated from 'Awn bin Abi Juhaifah that his father said : "I came to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and Bilal (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) came out and called the Adhan and he started doing like this in his Adhan; turning to his right and left."

CHAPTER (14)

'Abdur-Rahman bin 'Abdullah bin 'Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Sa'sa'ah Al-Ansari Al-Mazini narrated that his father told him that Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said to him : "I see that you love sheep and the desert. When you are with your sheep or in the desert and you call the Adhan for prayer, then raise your voice, for no human, Jinn or anything else hears the voice of the Mu'adh-dhin as far as it reaches, but it will bear witness for him on the Day of Resurrection." Abu Sa'eed (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said: "I heard it from the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)."

It was narrated from Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), who heard it from the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) :"The Mu'adh-dhin will be forgiven as far as his voice reaches, and every wet and dry thing will bear witness for him."

After that he said what the Mu'adh-dhin said, then he said : 'I heard the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) saying exactly like that.'"

Whoever asks for Wasilah for me, he will be entitled for my intercession.'"

It was narrated from Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : "Whoever says, when he hears the Mu'adh-dhin -أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ رَضِيتُ بِاللَّهِ رَبًّا وَبِمُحَمَّدٍ رَسُولاً وَبِالإِسْلاَمِ دِينًا  [ I bear witness that there is no God except Allah, with no partner or associate, and that Muhammad is the His servant and Apostle; I am content with Allah as my Lord, Muhammad as my Apostle and Islam as my religion], his sins will be forgiven."

It was narrated that Jabir (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said: "The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : 'Whoever says, when he hears the call to prayer - اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ هَذِهِ الدَّعْوَةِ التَّامَّةِ وَالصَّلاَةِ الْقَائِمَةِ آتِ مُحَمَّدًا الْوَسِيلَةَ وَالْفَضِيلَةَ وَابْعَثْهُ الْمَقَامَ الْمَحْمُودَ الَّذِي وَعَدْتَهُ  [O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and the prayer to be offered, grant Muhammad the Wasila and also the eminence, and establish him at the praised position that you have promised], will be granted my intercession on the Day of Resurrection."

It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin Mughaffal (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said : "The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : 'Between each two Adhans (Adhan and Iqama)  there is a prayer, between each two Adhans there is a prayer, between each two Adhans there is a prayer, for whoever wants to do it."

It was narrated that Anas bin Malik (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said : "When the Mu'adh-dhin called the Adhan, some of the Companions of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) would get up and rush to the pillars (in the Masjid) and pray until the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) came out and they were like that. They would pray before Maghrib and there was nothing between the Adhan and Iqamah."

Abu Sakhrah narrated that Abu Ash-Sha'tha' said : "A man left the Masjid after the call to prayer had been given, and Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said: 'This man has indeed disobeyed Prophet  Abu Al-Qasim (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).'"

He would prostrate for as long as it takes one of you to recite fifty verses, then he would raise his head. When the Mu'adh-dhin finished the call to Fajr prayer and he could see the dawn, he would pray two brief Rak'a, then he would go out with him." Some of these narrators (Ibn Abi Dhi'b, Yunus and 'Amr bin Al-Harith) added some phrases not mentioned by the others in the Hadith.

It was narrated from Makhramah bin Sulaiman that Kuraib - the freed slave of Ibn 'Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) - told him: "I asked Ibn 'Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ): 'How did the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) pray at night?' He said: 'He prayed eleven Rak'a including Witr, then he slept deeply until I could hear him snoring, then Bilal (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) came to him and said : "The prayer, O Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)!" Then he got up and prayed two brief Rak'a then led the people in prayer, and he did not perform Wudu'.'"
