BOOK # 2 - WATER

CHAPTER (1)

باب قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ‏{‏ وَأَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً طَهُورًا ‏}‏ وَقَالَ تَعَالَى ‏{‏ فَلَمْ تَجِدُوا مَاءً فَتَيَمَّمُوا صَعِيدًا طَيِّبًا ‏}

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) says "And We sent down pure water from the sky (Al-Furqan - 48); and He caused water to descend on you from the Sky" (Al-Anfal - 11).

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that one of the wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) performed Ghusl from Janabah, and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) performed Wudu' with her leftover water.  She mentioned that to him and he said : "Water is not made impure by anything."

Explanation

From the wordings of the Hadith, it looks, what Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) meant was,  the water does not get impure if the spouse uses the left over water from the Gusl of the other spouse to perform Wudu.

It was narrated that Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said: "It was said : 'O Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), you perform Wudu' from the well into which the bodies of dogs, menstrual rags and garbage are thrown?' He said: 'Water is pure and it is not made impure by anything.'"

It was narrated from Ibn Abi Sa'eed Al-Khudri (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that his father said:"I passed by the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) when he was performing Wudu' from the well of Buda'ah. I said: 'Are you performing Wudu' from it when garbage is thrown into it?' He said : 'Water is not made impure by anything."

Explanation

The well of Buda'ah was used by everyone, Muslims and non-Muslims both.  It is not comprehensible that the Sahabah would ever through dirt into a well.  It is reported that whenever there was a heavy rain, the rain water would carry the dirt down resulting in some dirt falling into the well which was located at a slope.  But the quantity of the dirt falling into the well was not substantial to make the water impure.  At-Tahawi  stated that the well was like a rive leading to a garden which meant that the water always flew out of well.  Probably, these were reasons the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said it pure for the purpose of Wudu.

It was narrated from 'Ubaidullah bin 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that his father said: "The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) was asked about water and how some animals and carnivorous beasts might drink from it. He said: 'If the water is more than two Qullahs, it will not become filthy.'"

It was narrated from Anas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that a Bedouin urinated in the Masjid, and some of the people went after him, but the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said: "Do not restrain him." When he had finished he called for a bucket (of water) and poured over it (and the traces of urine were soaked deep inside the earth).

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said: "A Bedouin stood up and urinated in the Masjid, so the people grabbed him. The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said to them: 'Leave him alone, and pour a bucket of water over his urine. For you have been sent to make things easy for people, you have not been sent to make things difficult.'"

CHAPTER (3)

The prohibition of one who is Junub performing Ghusl in standing water

Sunan an-Nasai, Vol 1, Bk 2, Hadith # 7
Abu Hurairah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said: "The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said: 'None of you should perform Ghusl in standing water while he is Junub.'"

CHAPTER (4)

Wudu with sea water

Sunan an-Nasai, Vol 1, Bk 2, Hadith # 8
Abu Hurairah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said: "A man asked the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم): 'O Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), we travel by sea and we take a little water with us, but if we use it for Wudu', we will go thirsty. Can we perform Wudu' with seawater?' The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said: 'Its water is a means of purification and its dead meat is permissible.'"

It was narrated that 'Aishah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) said: "The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) used to say -  اللَّهُمَّ اغْسِلْ خَطَايَاىَ بِمَاءِ الثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ وَنَقِّ قَلْبِي مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا نَقَّيْتَ الثَّوْبَ الأَبْيَضَ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ  [ O Allah, wash away my sins with the water of snow and hail, and cleanse my heart of snow and hail, and cleanse my heart of sin as a white garment is cleansed of filth.]

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said :"The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) would say - اللَّهُمَّ اغْسِلْنِي مِنْ خَطَايَاىَ بِالثَّلْجِ وَالْمَاءِ وَالْبَرَدِ [ O Allah, wash away my sins with the water of snow and hail.]

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said : "The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said: 'If a dog licks the vessel of any one of you, let him throw (the contents) away and wash it seven times.'"

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Mughaffal (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) commanded that dogs be killed, but he made an exception for hunting dogs and sheepdogs and said: "If a dog licks a vessel then wash it seven times and rub it the eighth time with dust."

It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin Mughaffal (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said: "The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) commanded that dogs be killed. He said: 'What do they have to do with dogs?' And he granted a concession regarding hunting dogs and sheepdogs. And he said: 'If a dog licks a vessel, wash it seven times, and rub it the eighth time with dust.' Abu Hurairah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) differed from him and said: 'Rub it one time with dust.'"

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said: "If a dog licks the vessel of any one of you, let him wash it seven times, the first time with dust."

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said: "If a dog licks the vessel of any one of you, let him wash it seven times, the first time with dust."

It was narrated from Kabshah bint Ka'ab bin Malik (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) that Abu Qatadah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) came to her, then she narrated the following: "I poured some water for him for Wudu', and a cat came and drank from it, so he tilted the vessel for it to drink." Kabshah said: "He saw me looking at him and said: 'Are you surprised, O daughter of my brother?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said: 'They are not impure, rather they are among the males and females (animals) who go around among you."

It was narrated that Ummul Momineen Aishah  (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) said: "While I was menstruating, I would nibble meat from a bone and the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) would put his mouth where mine has been. And while I was menstruating, I would drink from a vessel and he would put his mouth where mine had been."

It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said: "Men and women used to perform Wudu' together during the time of the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)."

It was narrated from Al-Hakam bin 'Amr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) forbade a man from performing Wudu' with the leftovers of a woman's (water for) Wudu'.

Explanation

The above Hadith looks to be an exception in the case of that person because in other Ahadith, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) did perform Wudu from the left over of water of Ghusl of Ummaha-tul-Momineen.

It was narrated from Ummul Momineen Aishah  (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) that she used to perform Ghusl with the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) from a single vessel.

It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin Jabr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said : "I heard Anas bin Malik (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) say: 'The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) used to perform Wudu' with a Makkuk (cup) and Ghusl with five Makkuks (cups).'"

It was narrated from Ummul Momineen Aishah  (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) used to perform Ghusl with a Mudd and Ghusl with approximately a Sa'.

It was narrated that Ummul Momineen Aishah  (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) said: "The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) used to perform Ghusl with a Mudd and Ghusl with a Sa'."
