CHAPTER (34)

بَابُ النَّهْيِ عَنْ ذَلِكَ

The prohibition of (performing ablution with the leftover water)
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 107
 
It was narrated from Hakam bin 'Amr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) forbade men to perform ablution with the left over water by a woman.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، حَدَّثَنَا الْمُعَلَّى بْنُ أَسَدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ الْمُخْتَارِ، حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ الأَحْوَلُ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَرْجِسَ، قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ أَنْ يَغْتَسِلَ الرَّجُلُ بِفَضْلِ وَضُوءِ الْمَرْأَةِ وَالْمَرْأَةُ بِفَضْلِ الرَّجُلِ وَلَكِنْ يَشْرَعَانِ جَمِيعًا ‏.  قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَاجَهْ الصَّحِيحُ هُوَ الأَوَّلُ وَالثَّانِي وَهَمٌ ‏  قَالَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَاتِمٍ، وَأَبُو عُثْمَانَ الْبُخَارِيُّ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا الْمُعَلَّى بْنُ أَسَدٍ، نَحْوَهُ ‏.‏
 
It was narrated that Abdullah bin Sarjis (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) forbade men to perform ablution with the water left over by a woman, and women to perform ablution with water left over by a man, however both (spouses) may start to perform their ablutions at the same time.'
 
Imam Ibn Majah said, the first (narration) is correct, and the second (narration) is Wahm (an error).

Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 109

 
It was narrated that Ali (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and his wife would take a bath from one vessel, but neither of them would have a bath with the leftover water of the other.'
 

CHAPTER (35)

بَابُ الرَّجُلِ وَالْمَرْأَةِ يَغْتَسِلاَنِ مِنْ إِنَاءٍ وَاحِدٍ

It was narrated that  Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) said,  the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and I would take a bath from a single vessel.

It was narrated from Ibn Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that his maternal aunt, Ummul Momineen Maimunah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) said, the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and I used to take bath from a single vessel.

It was narrated from Umm Hani (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) that : The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and Ummul Momineen Maimunah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) took  bath from a single vessel, a large bowl in which they were some traces of dough.

It was narrated that Jabir bin 'Abdullah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said, the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and his wives used to take a bath from a single vessel.

Zainab (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) the (step) daughter of Ummul Momineen Umm Salamah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) narrated from Ummul Momineen Umm Salamah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) that she and the Apostle  of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) used to take a bath from a single vessel.
 
 
 
 

CHAPTER (36)

بَابُ الرَّجُلِ وَالْمَرْأَةِ يَتَوَضَّآنِ مِنْ إِنَاءٍ وَاحِدٍ

A man and a woman doing ablution from a single vessel

It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said, men and women used to do Wudu from a single vessel during the time of the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 116
 
 
It was narrated that Umm Subyah Al-Juhaniyyah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) said, often my hand would touch the hand of the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) while performing ablution from a single vessel.
 
Imam Ibn Majah said, he heard  Muhammad said : 'Umm Subyah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) was Khawlah bint Qais (wife of Hamza bin Al-Muttalib -  رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ). I mentioned that to Abu Zur'ah and he said : 'It is true.'
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 117
 
 
It was narrated from Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) that she and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) used to perform ablution together for prayer.
 
 

CHAPTER (37)

بَابُ الْوُضُوءِ بِالنَّبِيذِ

Doing Wudu with Nabidh
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 118
 
It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that on the night of the jinn, the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said to him : 'Do you have water for ablution?' He said : 'No, I have nothing, but some Nabidh in a vessel.' He said : 'Good dates and pure water (there is no harm from the mixing of the two).' So he performed ablution with it. This is the narration of Waki'.
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 119
 
 
It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that on the night of the Jinn the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said to Ibn Mas'ud () : 'Do you have water?' He said : 'No, only some Nabidh in a large water skin.' The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : 'Good dates and pure water.' (there is no harm from the mixing of the two.) Pour it for me.' He said : 'So I performed ablution with it.'
 
 

CHAPTER (38)

بَابُ الْوُضُوءِ بِمَاءِ الْبَحْرِ

It was narrated that Mughirah bin Abu Burdah, who was from the tribe of Banu 'Abdud-Dar, said that he heard Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) say : 'A man came to the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and said : "O Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), we travel by sea and carry a small amount of water with us. If we use it for ablution, we will become thirsty. Can we perform ablution with seawater?' The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : 'Its water is a means of purification, and its dead meat is permissible. (ie. the fish found dead in the sea).'
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 121

 
It was narrated that Ibn Firasi (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said : 'I was fishing and I had a vessel with me in which I kept water, and I used seawater for ablution. I mentioned that to the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and he said : 'Its water is a means of purification, and its dead meat is permissible.'

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ بْنُ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، - هُوَ ابْنُ مِقْسَمٍ - عَنْ جَابِرٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ سُئِلَ عَنْ مَاءِ الْبَحْرِ فَقَالَ ‏ "‏ هُوَ الطَّهُورُ مَاؤُهُ الْحِلُّ مَيْتَتُهُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏  قَالَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْهِسِنْجَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ بْنُ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، حَدَّثَنِي إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، - هُوَ ابْنُ مِقْسَمٍ - عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ ‏.‏
 
It was narrated from Jabir (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)  was asked about seawater, and he said : 'Its water is a means of purification, and its dead meat is permissible'.

CHAPTER (39)

بَابُ الرَّجُلِ يَسْتَعِينُ عَلَى وُضُوئِهِ فَيُصَبُّ عَلَيْهِ

A man who asks for help for his Wudu and water is poured for him
 
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 123

 
It was narrated that Mughirah bin Shu'bah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said the 'Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) went out to relieve himself and when he came back, I met him with a water skin and poured water for him. He washed his hands and his face, then he went to wash his forearms but his garment was too tight, so he brought his arms out from underneath his garment and washed them, then he wiped over his leather socks, then he led us in prayer.'
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 124
 
 
It was narrated that Rubai' bint Mu'awwidh (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said he brought a basin of water to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and he said : 'Pour it,' so I poured it and he washed his face and forearms, then he took fresh water and wiped his head, front and back, and then he washed his feet. He washed each part three times.'
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 125

 
It was narrated that Safwan bin Assal (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said, he poured water for the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) on journeys and as a resident, when he performed ablution.'
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 126
 
 
Umm 'Ayyash (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا), the slave woman of Ruqayyah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا), the daughter of the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), said : 'I used to help the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) perform ablution, when I was standing and he was sitting.'
 
 

CHAPTER (40)

بَابُ الرَّجُلِ يَسْتَيْقِظُ مِنْ مَنَامِهِ هَلْ يُدْخِلُ يَدَهُ فِي الإِنَاءِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَغْسِلَهَا

When a man wakes up from his sleep should he put his hand in the vessel of water before cleaning the hand
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 127
 
 
Sa'eed bin Musayyab and Abu Salamah bin 'Abdur-Rahman narrated that : Abu Hurairah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) used to say : 'The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : 'When anyone of you wakes up from sleep, he should not put his hand into the vessel until he has poured water on it two or three times, for none of you knows where his hand spent the night'.
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 128

 
It was narrated from Salim from his father that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : 'When anyone of you wakes up from sleep, he should not put his hand into the vessel until he has washed it.'
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 129

 
It was narrated that Jabir (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said : "The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : 'When anyone of you gets up from sleep and wants to perform ablution, he should not put his hand into the vessel he used for ablution until he has washed it, because he does not know where his hand spent the night or where he put it.' (One of the narrators) Abu Ishaq said : 'What is correct is that it is narrated from Jabir (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), from Abu Hurairah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ).
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 130

 
It was narrated that Harith said : Ali (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) called for water, and he washed his hands before putting them in the vessel, then he said : 'This is what I saw the Apostle of Allah doing (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).'
 
 

CHAPTER (41)

بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي التَّسْمِيَةِ فِي الْوُضُوءِ

What has come about saying Bismillah when starting the Wudu

It was narrated from Abu Sa'eed (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : 'There is no ablution for one who does not mention the Name of Allah (before doing it).
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 132

 
It was narrated that Abu Sa'eed bin Zaid (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said : 'The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : 'There is no prayer for one who does not have ablution, and there is no ablution for one who does not mention the Name of Allah (before it).'

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said : 'The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : 'There is no prayer for one who does not have ablution, and there is no ablution for one who does not mention the Name of Allah (before it).'

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي فُدَيْكٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمُهَيْمِنِ بْنِ عَبَّاسِ بْنِ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ قَالَ ‏ "‏ لاَ صَلاَةَ لِمَنْ لاَ وُضُوءَ لَهُ وَلاَ وُضُوءَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَلاَ صَلاَةَ لِمَنْ لاَ يُصَلِّي عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ وَلاَ صَلاَةَ لِمَنْ لاَ يُحِبُّ الأَنْصَارَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏  قَالَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَاتِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْسُ بْنُ مَرْحُومٍ الْعَطَّارُ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمُهَيْمِنِ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ، فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ ‏.‏
 
It was narrated by Abdul Muhaimin bin 'Abbas bin Sahl bin Sa'd As-Sa'idi, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : 'There is no prayer for one who does not have ablution, and there is no ablution for one who does not mention the Name of Allah (before it). There is no prayer for one who does not send blessing, (Salat) upon the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), and there is no prayer for one who does not love the Ansar.'

CHAPTER (42)

بَابُ التَّيَمُّنِ فِي الْوُضُوءِ

Starting from the right in Wudu

It was narrated from  Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) liked to start on the right when purifying himself, when combing his hair and when putting on his footwear.
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 136
 
 
It was narrated that Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : 'When you perform ablution, start on the right.'

CHAPTER (43)

بَابُ الْمَضْمَضَةِ وَالاِسْتِنْشَاقِ مِنْ كَفٍّ وَاحِدٍ

Rinsing the mouth and sniffing up water into the nostrils with one handful of water

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) rinsed his mouth and sniffed water up into his nostrils from one scoop of water.
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 138
 
 
It was narrated from Ali (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) performed ablution and he rinsed his mouth three times, and sniffed water up into his nose three times from one handful.
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 139
 
 
It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin Zaid Al-Ansari (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) came to us and asked us for water for ablution. I brought water for him and he rinsed his mouth and sniffed water up into his nostrils from one handful.'
 
 

CHAPTER (44)

بَابُ الْمُبَالَغَةِ فِي الاِسْتِنْشَاقِ وَالاِسْتِنْثَارِ

Going to extremes in sniffing water up into the nostrils and blowing it out

It was narrated that Salamah bin Qais (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said  the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said to him : 'When you perform ablution, clean your nose, and when you use pebbles to clean yourself after defecating, use an odd number.'
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 141

 
It was narrated from 'Asim bin Laqit bin Sabrah that his father said : 'I said : 'O Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)! Tell me about ablution.' He said : 'Perform ablution properly and sniff water up into your nostrils thoroughly, unless you are fasting.'
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 142

 
Ibn Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that the Apostle of Allah  (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : 'Sniff up water into the nostrils thoroughly, two or three times.'
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 143

 
It was narrated that Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : 'Whoever performs ablution, let him clean his nose, and whoever uses pebbles to clean himself after defecating, let him use an odd number.'
 
 

CHAPTER (45)

بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي الْوُضُوءِ مَرَّةً مَرَّةً

What has been related about washing each part once in ablution

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَامِرِ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ النَّخَعِيُّ، عَنْ ثَابِتِ بْنِ أَبِي صَفِيَّةَ الثُّمَالِيِّ، قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ قُلْتُ لَهُ حُدِّثْتَ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ تَوَضَّأَ مَرَّةً مَرَّةً قَالَ نَعَمْ ‏.‏ قُلْتُ وَمَرَّتَيْنِ مَرَّتَيْنِ وَثَلاَثًا ثَلاَثًا قَالَ نَعَمْ ‏.‏
 
It was narrated that Thabit bin Abi Safiyyah Ath-Thumali said : 'I asked Abu Ja'far : Was it narrated to you from Jabir bin 'Abdullah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) performed ablution washing each part once?' He said : 'Yes.' I said : 'And each part twice, and each part thrice?' He said : 'Yes.'"
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 145
 
 
It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said, he saw the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) performing ablution, taking one handful (of water) at a time.'
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 146
 
 
It was narrated that 'Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said, he saw the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) during the campaign of Tabuk performing ablution, washing each part once.'
 
 

CHAPTER (46)

بَابُ الْوُضُوءِ ثَلاَثًا ثَلاَثًا

Washing each part three times in Wudu
 
 
Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 147
 
 
It was narrated that Shaqiq bin Salamah said, he saw Uthman and Ali (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہما) performing ablution, washing each part three times, and they said : 'This is how the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) used to perform ablution.'

Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol 1, Book 1, Hadith # 148
 
It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) performed ablution washing each part three times, and he attributed that to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

It was narrated from  Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) and Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) did ablution washing each part three times.

CHAPTER (47)

بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي الْوُضُوءِ مَرَّةً وَمَرَّتَيْنِ وَثَلاَثًا

It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) performed ablution washing each part once. He said : 'This is the ablution of the person from whom Allah will not accept his prayer without it.' Then he performed ablution washing each part twice, and he said: 'This is the ablution that Allah appreciates.' Then he performed ablution washing each part three times, and said : 'This is how ablution is performed properly, and this is my ablution and the ablution of the close Friend of Allah, Ibrahim (عليه السلام). Whoever performs ablution like this, then on completing it says : أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ [I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammed is His servant and His Messenger], eight gates of Paradise will be opened to him and he may enter through whichever one he wants.'"

It was narrated from Ubayy bin Ka'b (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) called for water and performed ablution once. He said : 'This is the minimum requirement of ablution' or he said : 'The ablution of one who, if he does not perform this ablution, Allah will not accept his prayer.' Then he performed ablution washing each part twice, and said : 'This is the ablution of one who, if he performs it, Allah will give him two shares of reward.' Then he performed ablution washing each part three times, and said : 'This is my ablution and the ablution of the Apostles who were sent before me.'
 
 

CHAPTER (48)

بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي الْقَصْدِ فِي الْوَضُوءِ وَكَرَاهِيَةِ التَّعَدِّي فِيهِ

It was narrated that Ubayy bin Ka'b (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said the Apostle of Allah said : 'There is a devil for ablution who is called Walahan, so be on guard against the insinuating thoughts (Wasawas) about water.'

It was narrated from 'Amr bin Shu'aib from his father, from his grandfather, that : A Bedouin came to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and asked him about ablution. He showed him how to perform it washing each part of the body three times. Then he said : 'This is the ablution and whoever does more than this, has done evil, transgressed the limits and wronged himself.'

It was narrated that Amr heard,  Kuraib saying : 'I heard Ibn 'Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) say : 'I stayed overnight with my maternal aunt Ummul Momineen Maimuna (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا), and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) got up and performed ablution from an old water skin, and he did a brief ablution. Then I got up and did the same as he had done.'

It is narrated that Ibn 'Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said, the Apostle of Allah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) saw a man performing ablution, and he said : 'Do not be extravagant, do not be extravagant (in using water).'

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Amr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Apostle of Allah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) passed by Sa'd (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) when he was performing ablution and said : 'What is this extravagance?' He said : 'Can there be any extravagance in ablution?' He said : 'Yes, even if you are on the bank of a flowing river.'
